Katerina Panagopoulos
Katerina Panagopoulos was born in Athens. She graduated from the Evangelical School of Nea Smyrni and she studied Foreign Literature at the University Paul Valery in Montpellier, France. She is married to the pioneer Shipowner Pericles S. Panagopoulos, often referred to as the patriarch of Greek Passenger Shipping, Honorary President of the Greek Passenger Shipowner Association, currently President of Magna Marine, dry cargo ship operator. The family businesses have, for many years, been sponsors of a significant number of Greek Athletics champions. She is the mother of a son and lives permanently in Athens. She speaks English, French and Italian. She has worked in Tourism.
Katerina Panagopoulos has been, for many years, a successful entrepreneur business person. Katerina Panagopoulos currently holds the following positions: • National Ambassador of Greece, in the Council of Europe on Sport, Tolerance and Fair Play (Fair Play), accredited by the Ministry of Culture in 1998. She performs her tasks on an exclusively voluntary basis. • President of Hellenic Women's Sport Association "KALLIPATEIRA", FOUNDED IN 1976. Kallipateira is a solely women’s' Athletic Club, member of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), recognized by the Ministry of Sports. • Goodwill Ambassador of the “Hellenic Political Science Association” (HPSA), November 2016. Katerina Panagopoulos is the first Greek woman who received the 1st Award of Europe "Women and Sport 2012" by the International Olympic Committee, in Los Angeles, February 2012. This award according to the Greek and International press was described as the first Gold Medal of Greece for the 2012 Olympics. Of equal significance are her activities within Greece, with her participation in conferences and workshops and with constant visits and lectures in schools and institutions throughout the country, with a view to disseminate the principles and values of fair play. Worthy of special mention, are her initiatives, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to organize in the United States of America, a series of lectures, at the largest centers of Diaspora Greeks (California and Florida), in order to bring together and activate the Greek Diaspora in the context of the organization of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Constantly working for the dissemination of the Olympic Values, she undertook the initiative of informing through memoranda and concrete proposals the Ministries of Education, Culture, Public Order, Health and Foreign Affairs about the importance of "fair play" and its crucial contribution to social cohesion and to world peace. During the organization of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, as Ambassador of Greece to the Council of Europe, she worked for the international promotion of the values of the of the Games, in cooperation with the responsible ministries, through specific programs and a series of lectures, in Schools, Institutions and Associations. In her capacity as the National Ambassador of Greece to the Council of Europe for Sport, Tolerance and Fair Play, she has been bestowed numerous awards and honors.
