Mark Arey is the Executive Director of The Hellenic Initiative (THI), which was founded in 2012 by members of the global Greek and Philhellene communities determined to respond to Greece’s economic crisis and help shape sustainable recovery. THI is headquartered in New York City but raises and distributes funds only for programs that directly affect Greece.
Prior to his affiliation with THI, Mark was a clergyman of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for thirty-four years, returning to lay status in 2013 in order to re-marry. During his career at the Archdiocese national headquarters, he was, at various times, the Director of Ecumenical Relations, Executive Director of Communications, the national spokesperson for the St. Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero (the church destroyed on 9/11), and interim Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral.
